WUJAL COMMUNITY
PLAN
Project
details and location : Wujal Wujal is a remote community
in Far North Queensland, situated on the Bloomfield River adjacent to
the Daintree National Park/ Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The local
people are the traditional owners of the Daintree, and they were living
a largely traditional life until as recently as the 1970s. At that time,
people were removed from their lands and relocated to a mission settlement
at the present site of the township.
Wujal Wujal
is governed by an Aboriginal Community Council, but the surrounding
lands of the Bloomfield Valley are largely within Cook Shire, some also
falling within Douglas Shire. The Community Plan for Wujal Wujal involved
developing strategies for co-ordination between the Wujal Wujal Community
Council, and Cook and Douglas Shire Councils.
There were
several components of this project : the Community Plan for Wujal Wujal
itself, a services plan for Cook Shire Council, a co-ordination plan
for Wujal Wujal Community Council working with Cook and Douglas Shire
Councils, and a funding strategy for implementing these plans. Support
for the implementation framework was negotiated with an external reference
committee comprising key Commonwealth and State Government agencies.
The Community
Plan received two State awards and one national award for excellence
from the Royal Australian Planning Institute.
